Before outdoor fireplaces became commonplace, Kansas and Jean Hernandez asked their designer to add one to the plans for their River Ranch home. April through October it is home to Chimney Swifts.  Then, after the birds migrate, it becomes the gathering spot for many parties.

 

This area also features a large Savannah Holly, ground orchids, two climbing roses ("Pinkie" and "Peggy Martin"), and many pass-along plants from Jean's grandmother (her gardening mentor), family, and friends.  Varied containers hold herbs, fruit-bearing trees and flowers.

 

Walk through the back gate into a cozy yard designed to attract birds and butterflies....
